A dear church friend asked me how in the world we were going to top 2016. How in the world do you top finally getting pregnant, having a beautiful boy, and finishing the house we have saved for for the last 10+years? What’s next? What can challenge me now?
I had gained 75 lbs while I was pregnant, so I had A LOT to lose and intense interventions were needed! I started an 4-day “bootcamp” style program in August 2016 to help lose the baby weight. The program incorporated cardio with circuit training for 60 minutes. Cardio was always my worse enemy, ok well and lunges, squats, etc…ok ALL OF IT, but more so cardio.
I’m highly competitive by nature, so when I came in last from any of the running circuits, I knew I had to kick it up in to high gear. My competitive side outweighed my distaste and hatred of cardio. So to challenge myself for 2017, I signed up for a 5K with the goal to run every mile of it!
As with most things that I do, I researched how to best accomplish this task with no prior running experience. Of course, when I say research, what I really mean is to ask all my facebook friends for tips and tricks. That’s just as good as Google right? The “Couch to 5K” app was the most popular tip among my peeps.
I had exactly 3 months before the date of the 5K run to train. I quickly downloaded the app, entered in all my information into the profile and I was ready to go! The app was very user friendly, I was able to listen to my music while still getting the training cues during my run. What was also nice about the app, was that it gradually increased the running intervals so that you can slowly gain stamina and confidence!
I am proud to say that I accomplished my goal and ran the entire 5K! This challenge not only completely changed my outlook on running as a sport, but also greatly increased my self-confidence in my ability to set a goal, make a plan and complete the journey!
I am happy to say that within the last year, I have completed three 5k’s, and have become a lover of running! I now run 3 days a week and have achieved my weight loss goal! What challenge are you most proud of?
